Okay, so this project was a total accident - but what a cool thing it turned into.  (And it's featured in the new Better Homes & Gardens article!)  I had seen the whole "plates on the wall with ribbon" just like you - a zillion times.  It's a good idea - a very charming and more interesting way to hang your plates.

I was also dealing with being 24 years old and collecting plates - am I allowed to like plates at my age?  Or do I have to be older  to start collecting things like that... not to stereo-type, but let's be honest, do you know anyone in their 20's that collects plates?  (Please let me know :))

Anyway, I couldn't just hang them on the wall like my grandma does - I was going for a little more funk.  These are vintage milk glass plates, made from melted down milk jugs (I think... :)).  I'm finding them around more often now, which is just so great! I'm adding to the collection fast.  Anyway, I measured out all the ribbon, put the plates in each of their own little plate hangers, and began hanging them at random heights with grosgrain ribbon.   It seemed like I had not thought the whole project through -- the brackets made the plates unable to lay neatly on the wall - they were just dangling there.  I stepped back to try and see how to "fix" the problem.  But by stepping back, I saw that it was actually really cute, and pretty creative!   It made a very whimsical feel in the room... like a large wind-chime.  So I kept it like it was.  Sometimes, looking at something you think is familiar, if you stand in a different place and capture what you see, you might just find something new and amazing.
